Safety and interoperability priorities for energy storage and V2G

Connecting equipment validation with microgrid coordination

Solar generation, battery storage, electric vehicle charging and flexible loads are increasingly being integrated into energy management and grid operations. BTL is following these developments and emphasizes that equipment safety, communication interoperability and system protection should be considered together during product development and deployment, with clearly defined, traceable validation conditions.

In this release, grid-edge integration means coordinating energy devices through communication, control and electrical interfaces. Network connectivity alone does not establish the capability or permission to export power. Validation must reflect equipment use, installation conditions and local interconnection requirements, from individual functions to integration across manufacturers.

Distinguishing equipment and system roles

Distributed energy resources (DERs) can include local generation, storage and controllable loads. A microgrid coordinates resources and loads within defined electrical boundaries; supplying power independently during a utility outage requires suitable isolation, controls, protection and energy capacity. A virtual power plant (VPP) aggregates resources across sites through communications and dispatch to provide flexibility or grid services. It is not equivalent to an island-capable microgrid.

V2G and autonomous operation require supporting capabilities

Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) operation requires coordination among the vehicle, charging equipment, communications and grid interface. ISO 15118-20 defines communication messages and sequences for bidirectional power transfer. Protocol support alone does not establish complete V2G functionality, interconnection permission or market eligibility. Battery management system (BMS) protection limits must also be coordinated with energy management system (EMS) dispatch commands.

Grid-forming inverters can help establish voltage and frequency, subject to energy availability, capacity and control design. Unintentional islanding detection and protection must be assessed separately from intentional microgrid islanding. Loss of cloud connectivity or communications does not automatically trigger off-grid supply. Transfer time, black-start capability and supported loads require testing under specified conditions.

Testing normal operation and recovery from disturbances

BTL recommends test plans aligned with target markets and product functions, addressing equipment and system integration needs:

Electrical safety and grid behavior: Assess insulation, temperature rise, protection and EMC. Check power quality, responses to abnormal voltage and frequency, and unintentional islanding protection against applicable requirements.

Interoperability and dispatch: Verify data models, commands, time synchronization and reporting. Test delays, packet loss and communication outages; a shared protocol does not ensure interoperability across manufacturers.

Cybersecurity and operational records: Assess authentication, access controls, updates and event logging. Record equipment versions, measurement methods and acceptance criteria, and test safe recovery after faults.

Following standards and practical deployment needs

BTL will continue to follow DER, microgrid and VPP technologies and standards, engaging with industry on equipment characteristics and validation needs. Participation in mechanisms such as Taiwan’s electricity trading platform remains subject to local eligibility, metering and performance requirements; connectivity does not guarantee revenue. Testing and service scope must be confirmed for each product, applicable standard and project.
